The History of Amped Studios and Storage

Amped Studios and Storage, located at 1109 and 1115 Arlington Ave, has a history that spans a century. The building was originally home to the Mosebach Electric and Supply Company, founded in 1924 by Karl Mosebach. Mosebach Electric manufactured industrial electrical products such as braking resistors, rail bonds, switches, and trolley taps for Pittsburgh’s booming steel mills and mines.

The original wooden structure at Arlington and Warrington Avenues was expanded and rebuilt into its current brick form in 1948. This location was tied to the famous Pittsburgh/Knoxville Incline, which operated until 1960, transporting freight and passengers between South 11th Street and the Allentown neighborhood. The rear of the building once connected directly to the incline’s upper terminus, offering a unique industrial heritage.

After Karl Mosebach’s passing in 1948, the company transitioned to new ownership and diversified into wholesale electrical supply. By 1990, Mosebach Electric Supply was sold to Consolidated Electrical Distributors (CED), and operations at this site ceased. However, the legacy of Mosebach remains, with two original signs—one high above the roofline facing Brosville Avenue and another above the garage door on Arlington Avenue, both proudly displaying "Mosebach Electric."

In 1995, a new chapter began when Mike Barry, owner of a moving company, purchased the building. Dan Split, a teenage employee at Barry’s company and an aspiring musician, saw an opportunity. After struggling to find stable rehearsal spaces for his band, Split convinced Barry to transform part of the building into dedicated band rehearsal rooms. By 1996, the first spaces were open, and the concept flourished.

Today, Amped Studios and Amped Self-Storage continue to honor the building’s industrial past while embracing modern technology and amenities. Recent upgrades include a high-speed Wi-Fi network, full access control with text-to-open features for exterior doors, and the modernization of the 10,000 lb capacity elevator, including a PLC upgrade for modern functionality. The parking lots have been repaved, enhanced lighting installed, and audio and video monitoring added for security.

Amped Studios and Storage stands as a fusion of Pittsburgh’s industrial history and its thriving creative scene, offering both musicians and local businesses the space and technology they need to succeed.
